Dear Festival Patron,
Re: Deferral of 2006 Frankston International Guitar Festival
Thank you for attending the 2005 Frankston International Guitar Festival. It was a huge success on all levels and this was largely due to your support and enthusiasm.
As you are aware, the Commonwealth Games is taking place in March 2006 and as a result, the Festival has been deferred until 2007. We are however, keen to welcome you back in 2007 (15 to 18 March)
Until then, keep on twangin' and remember: practice, practice, practice!
Best regards,
Brett Kingman
Artistic Director
PERFECTLY PLUCKED
Thousands of guitar lovers ascended upon Frankston for the 9th annual Frankston International Guitar Festival on March 18 to 20.
The Festival featured more than 40 local, national and international artists, as well as demonstrations, workshops, clinics and, for the first time, the national acoustic exhibition.
International artists included Jennifer Batten (USA), fingerpicker extraordinaire Muriel Anderson (USA), Ned Evett (USA), Nigel Gavin (NZ), John McCutcheon (USA), and Corey Christiannsen (USA).
Twenty-year-old Melbourne classical guitarist Thomas Clay won the coveted Young Guitarist of the Year.
The third-year music student won from a record number of entries, and took home a Maton Blue Grass thumb picking guitar worth $2400, Jose Ortega guitar valued at $1269, $1000 worth of recording studio time with Evolupe Studios and 100 CDs with which to record demos, from Implant Design.
He was also presented with a perpetual trophy. The festival’s Encouragement Award went to Bryan Brown, 11, from Macquarie Fields in New South Wales.
Jason McGregor, from Oxley in Queensland, won the fingerpicking title, walking away with a Cole Cark Fat Lady 2 guitar, $500 rehearsal time with Bayside Rehearsal Studios and guaranteed entry to the International Fingering Championships held at the Walnut-Valley Festival, Wingfield, Kansas, USA in September, 2005.
Brett Kingman, the Festival Artist Director; was ecstatic following the Festival. “This year’s Festival was the most successful, relaxed and vibrant ever. Patrons really appreciated the changes made to the expo and in particular bringing the Festival back to its grass roots.” said Brett Kingman. “The National Acoustic Exhibition and the Guitar Expo was a highlight of the Festival”. “The expo showcased the craftsmanship and talents of local and international guitar makers and luthiers. In its inaugural year the National Acoustic Exhibition featured a range of ‘boutique’ handcrafted guitar and amps”. Ellis Guitars, O’Donnell Guitars, Jackson’s Rare Guitars, Fender Australia and CMC Music were just some of the leading guitar manufacturers, importers, guitar makers, retailers and wholesalers, and exhibitors at the Expo displaying their wares over the weekend to big crowds.
